What is a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor?

A PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor is a professional diver who has the knowledge and skills to teach scuba diving courses. As an Open Water Scuba Instructor, you'll be a role model for other divers, providing guidance, support, and ensuring everyone's safety underwater. You'll also be responsible for conducting confined water dives, knowledge development sessions, and open water training dives.

The PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) course is the second component of the PADI Instructor Development Course (IDC) and is designed for PADI Assistant Instructors and instructors from other training agencies to crossover and become a PADI Open Water Scuba Instructor. The course introduces you to PADI's approach to teaching and reviews the standards, sequencing, and teaching methods of each program that you will be able to teach.

The Open Water Scuba Instructor (OWSI) program completes the entire IDC and go on to attend an Instructor Examination (IE), which is the final step to earn a PADI Instructor certification.
